Brainstorming for the Project

IMG_7711.jpg

Starting this project was hard, because I had no clue in what I wanted to do, so I decided to separate the different themes, materials and forms that i could see myself doing for the final piece. The themes I had the hardest time deciding as there are so many aspects to look into within each subject. I also found it hard to limit myself as I didn't want to take away a good idea/opportunity for the project. So I decided to move forward with the topic that would allow me to read more and become more informed from different directions, which was consciousness and liminal space. Within that, there are so many sibjects to explore, especially when you take into account that one can take other topics and look at consciousness and liminal space from that perspective.

Idea development for Park

IMG_7882.JPG  IMG_7885.JPG.1

At first I wasn’t sure on what I want to do, but keeping the idea of using sustainable materials in the back of my mind. This led me into looking at sustainable and obtainable materials that I could easily use and recycle at the end of the project. I looked into cans especially, as aluminum is an extremely valuable resource. I like using the reflective silver material (in general) which made me think of using the inside of the cans as the outside is often printed on. It also made me think of creating small boxes to create a column.

For this project, I still want to include sensory effects, so I thought of ways that I could include this in the park. I remember when visiting that it was quite windy, making me think of ways to include the it into the project. I was thinking of the way that wind is able to “whistle” when there are small gaps between areas. I decided to experiment with some of the cans that I already had, by cutting different holes into them to see how it would be affected when placed in the wind. However when attempting to do so, I wasn’t able to capture any sound, this could be due to the fact that the cans themselves are not long enough to conduct the air to make a sound.

Add about tacky ness above when talking about silver

After discussing my idea with my tutor, I decided to finding ways to remove the printed ink

Performance Seminar

The performance seminar was really interesting and fun, as I was curious on how I could add more performative elements into my work, especially as it may become more interactive with the audience.

We played a game that made us engage with silence and how that affects each individual. It was fascinating to see how others reacted, either by giggling, smiling, or disrupting with sounds and comments. The silence was highlighted more than usual because we were all facing each other rather sitting in individual desks where we normally wouldn't see each other - we interacted with others by looking at each other.

Then, there was an activity where one had the option to come forward and present the shoe and explain why it was important/ the story behind it. Personally, I didn't go up, although I wanted to because I was overthinking what I was going to say. Though this shouldn't have been an issue, I will try to improve it for next time and try to become more involved.

This seminar has taught me that people can react to things differently, and that some actions can be perceived differently.

In continuation in my quest to find more tins, I emailed the contact that was given to me by the recycling centre, and found that it may be my way to find my materials. I have sent in my membership and will be heading over on Thursday after my progress tutorial. Hopefully they have what I will be needing

After having emailing multiple sources that could have possibly supplied my with cans, I realised that perhaps my best option was to make a sign and place a box below in my accommodation for others to give their own cans. I will have to wait and see if this actually works, otherwise I will make another box and place it in Archway along with the sign.

After the progress tutorial, I went to the Papa John's down the street to see if they had of the larger, industrial cans available. They were actually able to give me three of the cans which I had to clean first. I was surprised that they would give it to me, however now I know that if I need anymore of the larger cans, I can go to different restaurants and see if they would have any of these cans available.

Afterwards, I went to the Scrapstore in Tooting, Broadway to have a look around and see if they any cans available. When I first got there, I was surprised by the amount of things that they had, especially as some were incredibly random and I would not have thought that people would have a use for such objects. However, it is very practical as an art student to know of such places. I was able to collect the majority of the cans and take them home with me. This was a huge success as they had many of the industrial cans, meaning that the tree will become much taller and hopefully sturdier. I can't wait to start my project.

Update on Park

At the moment, I am not sure what I should do for my Park project. I am torn between keeping my idea or developing it further to create something around the crisis, however I think that would be difficult especially due to the lack of materials.

At first I thought that I could continue with my current plan of creating the sculpture out fo cans, however, I think it would be unrealistic as it would be difficult to get the material/equipment as many areas are closed. I then thought that I could make a smaller version around one of the smaller olive trees my dad has (he had cut off the branches due to it being unhealthy), and then cover the tree with the cans. Though this is a good idea, I don't think I would be able to create it to the full effect that I would like to.

With further investigating, I think my best option would be to make a scaled model of the sculpture, using Nespresso capsules. We have a lot of them due to my parents enjoying the coffee, and that we save them to bring them to recycling. This basically is the same concept as the original piece, especially with the recycling. In Switzerland, almost everything is recycled here, the customers separate the goods and have to bring them to a recycling centre. In London, recycling in general is not as heavily encouraged as in Switzerland, so a lot of recyclable goods end up in landfill, or are not recycled properly.

I think with this point, it carries the same concept, maybe even more specific, as the piece was supposed to be presented in a Park in London from cans collected in the UK. However, it is being presented using recycled capsules in Switzerland (pretending to be Waterlow Park), using a product that is less recycled in the UK.

Last week and the Park Project

During the past week, I have been continuously working on my park project. Throughout the process, there were some decisions that I needed to make which allowed me to complete my project. Some of these were that for the base part of the capsule, I would use wine corks to stabilise it as well as to attach the capsules to each other. The reason why I chose the wine corks is that they are a sustainable and reusable product, which fits my theme.

As I finished each piece, I wasn't sure how I would attach them to each other, when I realised that by cutting some wire at the length of about 2cm, I would connect the one piece on each end and then push them together, which would give me a stable yet flexible tree, which would allow me to change the shape if need be.

Refocusing on my PPP

Throughout the process of rethinking my idea for the personal project, I kind of lost track of what I really wanted to do. My previous ideas were good, however I wasn't sure how to continue them and make it accessible to an audience. So I decided to look back at my original PPP, and realised that was looking more into the senses than I was into consciousness and liminal space. I think to create in this theme is to go "inside" first, to look at how we may be able to perceive the senses the most, and something that everyone can recognise.

I found that the best way would to be able to do this would be to make a video with each sense in a way that we can identify with and are able to experience.  My first ideas for these would be:

  • touch: close up filming of skin (like an arm)
  • scent: filming of smoke (everyone knows how it can smell)
  • sight: filming of looking up into a very bright sun
  • taste: filming of the inside of the throat
  • sound: recording of rain

For each recording there will be instructions where the audience/participants will need material to create an experience. These are some of the things that I came up with were:

  • touch: leather shoes or bag/similar material to leather
  • scent: a match or a lighter
  • sight: a bright lamp
  • taste:
  • sound: some water that will be carefully trickled onto the skin, whilst the participants have their eyes closed.

these will hopefully recreate the senses and isolate each and every single one, which may give a certain clearance to the consciousness.

Reflection on Park Project

At the start of this project, I knew that I wanted to work with materials that I could easily recycle of reuse. This was something important to me as the previous projects always has some kind of remnants that would take up a lot of space. I also wanted to make my project more environmentally friendly and are so that others can see how well this kind of thinking could turn out. When we were back in uni, I was ready to start the project, especially as I had collected all of the tins that would have needed. With the turn around of events, I had to leave London to go back home. This of course changed my project as I wasn't able to transport. the already collected material, and didn't have the right equipment to complete the original idea.

It led me to thinking of other ways in creating and making art with the same mindset of using sustainable materials. Looking around to what was available at home, I was able ro use Nespresso capsules - the use and the way that they are recycled are similar to that of tins, as they are made of aluminium. To stabilise the base, I used cork as it is also a sustainable and recyclable material, which works with the original concept.

After having completed my piece, I went to photograph it in the park, as if it was still part of the park exhibition. Despite the change in material and location, I think the message is still clear - maybe even more so as it is easier to move. I also realised, that after taking the photographs, there was a sort of livliehood within the sculpture. it seemed to come alive, and depending on the perspective, it had a similar figure to that of a human. I think this makes it even more interesting and changes the way that I saw the sculpture previously. Before it was more of a tree, now it is more of an object that has life and can imitate movement.

Th park project was something was excited about and interested in learning how to work and exhibit in a public space with lots of other artists. It was saddening that it all had to be cancelled however, I am very lucky that I was still able to change and rethink my project as well as complete and take photographs in a park, where others, due to the situation may not have had the chance. I think it shows that the climate that we are in can make everyone vulnerable and that we really need to think and develop further on how we can create in these circumstances.

Performance Workshop - Friday 1st May 2020

During this session, we were able to show our final projects. I thought it was really nice to look at the work that others were able to make throughout the crisis, and despite being stuck at home/inside.

My tutor had sent out my project before the meeting started, allowing some students to test out and experience my piece, which allowed me to receive feedback from the session.

Feedback:

  • The skin part of the video and activity was successful - however due to seeing the shoe, it lost a bit of the effect, so if this were to be recreated in an installation, to put the shoe in a box, so the audience would be able to feel it out.
  • The video had activity had a transporting quality; especially the fire/scent part was strong, and the sound was incredibly crucial for the work
  • The project became a ritualitic act, especially as the material choice was taken in consideration - items that were available in most households.
  • The idea of using senses was powerful - it connected to memory, especially the scent and taste (fire, ocean) as many have been there and are sent back to remember a specific moment.

I am really happy and proud of my final outcome, and how others experienced it. I think that despite having to alter the main idea of having an installation of my project, I was able to change it that it is accessible to people all over, in the comfort of their own home.

24th February 2020 - Feedback on Proposal

I showed my tutor my project proposal, and there is still much that I need to improve on. The theme is too broad and can be difficult for the audience to understand (eg liminal space) especially if they have no former knowledge about it. With this, I will have to narrow my topic down; I was looking into the johari window model which is the idea of self perception and perception of others. I will also try to look into similar models that may narrow down my topic. Furthermore, the artist influence that I have mentioned is much too basic and I need to improve on it to make it much more extensive and show what they have done and how it can help with my project. This means that I will have to dissect the works and their meanings much more to address the relevant topic/idea. This I will do by reading more of their exhibition texts and biography’s and research that they have done.

26th February 2020 - Feedback on Proposal

After tking the new feedback into account, I made some editing from the day before. Today I was able to show my changes to the tutor, which allowed me to improve my proposal even more. The alterations that I will need to do are:

  • explain more about liminal space
  • add my own experience at certain exhibitions that have inspired me to take on the topic
  • simplify what I want to do
  • add more about the Johari window

Hopefully, once these changes have been done, my proposal will be completed so that I can continue planning my project.

Monday 2nd March 2020

To continue with this idea, I talked to my tutor, who liked the idea, however saw the issue with the colour on the aluminium cans. If the ink is not removed, the different companies will be seen all over the tree, perhaps more desired for a marketing idea rather than an art installation. If I were to leave the ink, it would become incredibly tack and lose the aesthetic of it. This meant that I would have to research ways to remove the ink off the cans or find an alternative material to create the cans.

Tuesday 3rd March 2020

I talked to my other tutor and they too liked the idea. Whilst talking with a classmate, there was a way to keep it more interactive and sensory. This would be done by adding holes into the lower part of the tree so that children can communicate and make noises. Also to add smaller objects such as rice and other things to the top "branches" so that it makes different noises when moved/interacting with the wind.

The only thing that was concerning was how I would be able to make it stable/attach the piece in a way that would be safe. It led me to talking to the technicians (who unfortunately had to leave, but will talk to them properly another time) who said that it would be best to attach the tree to a wooden plank and then use equipment similar to the tent attachment pieces to fasten it to the ground.

I will still need to look into both ideas/issues to continue with my work

Real Impact Seminar

At first I wasn't sure what to expect, however was pleasantly surprised, as the topic that we were discussing about was similar to my own interests and concepts, especially for Park. We discussed within small groups whether or not art was relevant. What came up most was the ethics in art and art being seen as "not as important" by people outside the field or that don't have an interest in it.

We looked into different artists that used materials available (Trevor Paglen and the Trinity Cube), or that would create materials for the future (Katie Patterson and her Future Library), so really trying to be resourceful as possible.

For the next session, we will have to research into different artists that work in a similar way, whether it be concept, material or reaction.

Monday 9th March 2020

Doing some research, when I realised that the best way to find out if I could use recycled tins and cans would be to actually email the establishments and see if there is anything I can do/ they can provide. Unfortunately, the recycling centre was able to provide material due to health and safety risks, however they were able to give further information on where I could get some of the materials as well, which was really helpful.

Monday 9th March 2020

I started talking with technicians to see how I could create the actual project. Especially regarding how I will have it safely placed within the park. The first idea was to have a square/rectangular plank of wood, where the pole of the tree would be slotted into. The wooden plank would be "nailed" or "screwed" into the ground, similar to how tents are attached to the ground.

It was then recommended that I make a mini mock up of the tree to see how the branches/tins would be able to align safely without there being any holes between each tin. The technician said that it would be best to "thread"/bead the tins onto the pole by making a hole in the top and bottom of the tin. To attach them together so that they pose no risk of falling apart, he suggested that I add small punctures into then and "sew" them together with metal wire. However, I proposed the idea of using some kind of connecting hook that can be screwed in, which seems better as it would appear cleaner.

I made the mini mock up out of cardboard rolls that were available as well as small wooden sticks.

Progress tutorial - Thursday 12th March 2020

During this progress tutorial, we discussed quite a few different points. At first, it was about my time management, especially as with my 'Room' project, I had run out of time to finish some things up, for example adding the lights to illuminate the 'fire'. I will have to work on my time management skills so that my project works out well. I will also have to experiment and work more in the workshops and allow adaptations to my project in response to my material.

For my PPP, I will also have to experiment with the senses, for example by trying it out at the performance workshop that is coming up. For example by taking out some handcreme and see how others may react to it, as well as maybe other scents/senses that are used in daily life.

I will also have to look at the sound that the cans could make, especially as would like the can tree to include some sort of aspects that reflect the senses. Maybe by adding rice or similar product into the top bits, so whenever the wind blows the rice will rattle against the cans.

For the collection of the cans, I could also collect the bigger ones at restaurants, as they have more industrial sized cans.

I will work further on these suggestions so that I can improve my work

Tuesday 17th March 2020

By this time, I knew that I would be going home due to the situation with the Coronavirus. This meant that I unfortunately won't be able to work in the workshops, or create my sculpture. It also means that Park will most probably not take place as well as other really interesting and exciting opportunities.

IMG_8176.JPG.1 IMG_8184.JPG

Before I left, I decided to set up all the cans that I had collected from restaurants, the scrapstore and the collections that were given from fellow students. With the amount that I had accumulated, I would have been able to create a really cool tree - however I had to leave all the cans behind, and hopefully be able to rebuild the sculpture sometime in the future, or bring back to a recycling centre or the scrapstore.

Update on PPP

For my PPP, I am thinking about altering my idea from an installation to a more instructionable piece of work that the audience can do from home. This would be safer for the audience, as well as the lack of materials available through all shops being closed, I wouldn't be sure if I would have been able to make an installation. I am thinking of doing something similar to Yoko Ono's work as well as Satoshi Hashimoto. I still want to create an experience, so by asking the audience to choose specific scents (herbs, spices, flowers etc), as well as potentially creating audiovisuals,  it would be like a stay-at-home, diy installation. I am still deciding and thinking on which instructions to go with and what ideas for "experiences" I could use.

Monday 30th March 2020

To start off this project, I took the Nespresso capsules that my parents collected for recycling. As some were older, they were a bit mouldy, so I avoided them and started cleaning out the newer capsules. The bottom of the capsule has a net like aluminium cover,, that was easy to open up as it had already been used through the coffee making process.

I had to scoop and scratch out the coffee that was still inside. Then I put the capsule into a bowl with some water so that it could be rinsed a bit whilst I did the same to the rest of the capsules. Afterwards, I had to carefully clean all the capsules properly so that no spores would remain, and to ensure they were fresh and empty. In the Nespresso capsules (the "off brand" ones were fine) there was some sort of latex/papery textured layer that I wanted to remove incase there was anything remaining between the surfaces. Finally I cleaned each individual cap with some spray to ensure they were hygienic.

Tutorial Feedback - Thursday 16th April 2020

For this tutorial, I wanted to ensure that my park project was completed, so that I was able to show it to my tutorial in real time. They liked my end result, and that I should, in my contextual practice, write a more thorough reflection of the whole park project and my experience of changing material to how the piece acted. We also discussed, that through out the series of images, the tree started to come alive/had an animated feeling of movement.

Next, we discussed my progress for my PPP. I knew that I wanted to still stay with my original idea of the senses and self awareness, however would have to make it more accessible t oa wider, online audience as an interactive installation is no longer be appropriate. I was previously looking into online museums to see what I could do, but the experience of "going" was lacking. There was a flatness to the interaction due to the screen and the senses were only kept to the visual - the authenticity of a museum is lost through the lack of sound, smell, touch and taste of the surrounding. With the tutor, we talked about how I could remove the flatness/2d barrier for this project so the senses can still be engaged. And we came to a point were a suggested that it would be interesting to create a sort of "diy" home project, where I use materials that are available in most households. However I was not sure how I would implement this, so I need to do some further experimentations.

Process for the PPP

For the actual creation of the video, I had to decide the order of my clips and where I would get them from. For touch, I filmed bits of my arm as well as filmed with a microscopic camera that films the skin close up - these I then merged together.

Originally for scent, I was going to use smoke fro my video clip, however it was very difficult to fin filming of natural smoke. This led me to choosing fire as it was easier find clips for: I used a clip from a campfire from youtube.

For taste, I was going to film the tongue and the back of the throat, and have the audience drink or eat something. However I felt that this was something that we couldn't really actively experience. This is why I decided to change it to the ocean, as many people have either been to a lake, ocean, or pond. Drinking salt water is something that happens to many on multiple occasions when swimming in the ocean. This in combination of licking salt and the feeling of the sugar can help with feeling of sand brings back memories of the beach or a coast.

Sound was an easier situation as I personally love the sound of rain, especially as it relaxes me. However for others it might be more uncomfortable. But by mixing the sound of rain and the splashing of water, is a little reminder of going outside.

We are surronded by sight, so it was difficult to focus on one idea for the clip and activity. When looking in the sun, a lot of the time the little black blobs or specks appear in our eyesight. This is something that is often uncomfortable, but I thought it would be interesting to attempt to recreate this feeling/effect. Also looking into the sun, makes me sneeze a lot, which I thought could be an interesting effect if this would happen.

After completing my editing, I tested it on some of my family members at home. It worked pretty well, however made some adjustments, for example moving some of the clips around. I also, in the end added the combination of clips, because I thought it would not only be a nice ending but it also combines the different senses.
